Geeks only: Worst fragmented drive!

Tag: LaughsGrantus Maximus @ 5:51 pm

Okay so if you’re not computer savvy turn away now.. most of my friends (sorry guys) aren’t, who presumable make up most of the people who actually bother to read this blog!

defrag

File fragmentation is when a single file is (without your knowledge) is physically stored by splitting it and putting bits on various areas of your hard drive. This is common when a big file won’t fit in any of the little pigeon holes of free space… so its split but still looks like it normally would to you…

Anyways this is a production server at work running Windows 2000 Advanced Server. This is a fragmentation analysis of a drive… The areas in green I believe basically untouchable the rest of the drive however is ALL fragmented… RED is bad.. This is the for time anyone had see a drive this bad!

Fragmentation is often dismissed as no threat to performance, however, the reality is that like a disease, it can silently proliferate if allowed to grow unchecked and manifest itself in a number of ways – longer read/write times, bad optical media burns, longer boot up times, greater heat generation due to overworked drives etc. So it is better to tackle fragmentation as it arises, before it becomes serious enough a problem to be of concern. Especially on critical servers, it can turn out to be quite a nightmare for the sysadmin dept!
