Indy 2005 – Gold Coast
My weekend was spent at the Lexmark Indy 300 on the Gold Coast… I was doing promotional work for Coke which was sooo physically draining!! We worked 8am-5pm. In the morning I had to walk from our compound to setup a display stand then basically stand at it all day long, swapping coke lids for lanyards (ticket holders)…
As if standing all day wasn’t difficult enough I ended up going drinking with the promo staff (Gillette, Duracell and JetStar girls etc… we all worked for the agency and were staying together – Some real Legends!!) and we were up each night to 2-3am… They were lucky they didn’t have to start as early as the Coke crew… but they were much more scantly dressed, and had to deal with the sleazy drunks! Haha
But all in all it was a fun experience… I was setup next to a Streets ice cream stand so was able to chat to the Streets girl each day… ohh, get free ice cream!
Aside from that it was a generally boring (mindless) task so I kept myself entertained by promoting the lanyards in amusing manners… Mostly yelling out “free lanyards” with an irish carnival folk accent… As the days past by I got more creative – using the same voice these was some other catch phrases I had:
- “You’ve heard of free tibet folks, You’ve heard of free willy, but have you heard of the free lanyard?”
- “Invest in your future with a free lanyard”
- “Make the most of the latest in scientic research with a free lanyard that holds your mobile” (it had an elastic pocket designed for this)…
- “FREE LANYARDS” followed by a much quieter “conditions apply, while stocks last”
- “Free loves overratted folks, but the free lanyard isn’t”
Well, I was amused anyways – it was funny because you could tell who walking past was paying attention cause they’d turn and smirk… othertimes the crowd had to wait for a controller to let them walk over a bridge so I’d end up with a big audience standing in front of me… Hehe
Its highly amusing to watch a large crowd all looking in the same direction simultaneously turn to look at you when you start yelling at them… ;) Sheep!!
All in all it was an excellant way to develop those public speaking skills ;).. Ohh and as for the winning batercard girls from around Australia.. most were average looking but I found the girl who deserved MISS INDY 2005… I’ll post a photo of her soon!!
